Sealife Adventure in Southend recognised as world-class with prestigious seal of approval

Southend’s Sealife Adventure has been officially recognised as a world-class zooquarium — earning national acclaim for the exceptional care its team provides, from tailored diets to enrichment that keeps animals happy, healthy and thriving.

The popular seafront attraction has been awarded Accredited Status by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) — the highest recognition for animal care, conservation, education and research in the UK and Ireland. It confirms Sealife Adventure’s place among the leading zoos and aquariums across the country.

Behind the scenes, staff take great care to ensure animals are healthy and thriving. It is especially noticeable in the aquarium tanks, where the fish are bright, active and in excellent condition — a clear sign of expert care.

Diets are carefully managed and feeding is closely monitored, with food types and amounts adjusted to support health, behaviour and condition. The result? Tanks full of vibrant marine life — with bright colours and well-conditioned, plump fish that reflect the high quality of care they receive.

Philip Miller MBE, Executive Chairman of the Stockvale Group, which owns Sealife Adventure, said: “We’ve always aimed to deliver something truly special here on Southend seafront – and now we’ve been recognised at the highest level. This isn’t just a local attraction– it’s a world-class destination, and we’re proud to put Southend on the map.

“Our team go above and beyond — day in, day out. Whether it’s preparing tailored feeds, delivering enrichment, or monitoring wellbeing, they do it with dedication and precision.

“This accreditation is a huge credit to every member of the team and I could not be more proud of their achievements.”

Sealife Adventure among the first to be accredited in the new scheme which has been launched by BIAZA. The comprehensive accreditation process includes screenings by industry experts, questionnaires and plenty of documented evidence.

The process goes above and beyond the UK/Ireland’s zoo licensing inspection and marks the extra efforts of good zoos and aquariums in providing the very best in animal care and recognises their work to create a better planet for animals and people.

Joe Lavery, a national aquarium specialist who supported Sealife Adventure through the BIAZA accreditation process, said: “I’ve worked with many zoos and aquariums over the years, and the dedication shown by the team at Sealife Adventure really stands out.

“The commitment to best practice, constant improvement, and the welfare of their animals is second to none.

“This accreditation is well-earned, and richly deserved. Sealife Adventure delivers high standards with passion and purpose.

“Their staff know their animals and their mission — and they consistently deliver on all three.”

Dr Jo Judge, CEO of BIAZA, added: “Receiving accredited status is not an easy thing to do. It is testament to the passion and hard work of every member of staff.

“Our accreditation programme means visitors can be sure that BIAZA zoos and aquariums are dedicated to looking after their animals to the highest standard and to inspirational work in conservation and education.

“We need good aquariums more than ever. We face a nature crisis and we have the power to make a big difference.”
